  1. Transnet Freight Rail ran a 696-car, 4.7-mile empty ore train on the Sishen–Saldanha line, claiming the record from BHP's 682-car 2001 train.
  2. BNSF and CSX launched a 100-hour Los Angeles–South Kearny, N.J., intermodal train on Oct. 5, converting 100 highway loads to rail daily.
  3. The FRA awarded $2.3 billion in CRISI grants to 105 projects in 45 states plus D.C., chosen from 368 applications seeking $12.2 billion.
  4. A locomotive fire on UP's executive train halted Wabtec C44ACM No. 6909 near Fort Worth, Texas, with no injuries reported.
  5. Amtrak's eastbound Empire Builder was canceled Oct. 1 after the westbound train was stuck 12 hours behind a BNSF derailment at Minot, N.D.

Transnet Freight Rail has claimed the world record for the longest freight train, running an empty 696-car ore formation stretching 7.6 km — 4.7 miles — on its 861-km Iron Ore Export Line between Sishen in the Northern Cape and the port of Saldanha, South Africa.

The run strips the record from Australian mining company BHP, which had held it since 2001 with a 682-car, 7.35-km (4.56-mile) loaded train in Western Australia's Pilbara region. That train, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, also set a tonnage record of 99,732.1 metric tons. Transnet held the record before BHP.

The South African national operator said in a press release that the record train "demonstrates the world-class engineering expertise, operational excellence, and innovation that continue to position the Iron Ore Export Line among the world's leading heavy-haul rail systems, while generating valuable technical insights to support the future evolution of rail operations."

The claim is an operator announcement; Guinness certification of the new mark has not been confirmed. What does this change for the Sishen–Saldanha corridor? Transnet frames the run as a source of operational data for heavier, longer formations on a line that competes directly with Pilbara heavy-haul systems for iron ore export capacity.

Amtrak long-distance trip report finds demand on strained Superliners

A trip report on Amtrak's Coast Starlight and California Zephyr, published this week by Trains Magazine's Bob Johnston, found strong demand and dedicated workers on capacity-challenged Superliner equipment — and what the author calls squandered opportunities.

The journey substituted for a planned Empire Builder trip. Amtrak canceled the eastbound Builder outright on Oct. 1 after the westbound train, No. 8, spent 12 hours stuck behind a freight derailment at Minot, N.D., on BNSF tracks. The Builder's eastbound departure depends on a 5½-hour equipment turn from the late-arriving westbound train, a schedule mechanical maladies and BNSF congestion in Montana seldom allow.

Johnston, notified of the cancellation by text and email while riding the first Airo revenue run, instead took the next day's Seattle–Los Angeles Coast Starlight to Sacramento, then the eastbound California Zephyr to Chicago. The report documents both the positives and the negatives of a complex long-distance operation running on aging bi-level equipment.

Locomotive fire halts UP executive train near Fort Worth

A locomotive fire stopped Union Pacific's executive train Tuesday afternoon in Watauga, Texas, a Fort Worth suburb roughly 10 miles northeast of the city on UP's Choctaw Subdivision.

Video from WFAA-TV shows damage to the lead locomotive, Wabtec C44ACM No. 6909. A City of Watauga Facebook post reports police and fire crews responded and extinguished the blaze. UP said in a statement there were no injuries and the passenger cars were not affected; the railroad did not answer a question about why the train was operating.

The fire broke out around 3:50 p.m. and temporarily blocked the grade crossing at Basswood Boulevard/Hightower Drive and U.S. Route 377.

BNSF and CSX cut coast-to-coast intermodal schedule to 100 hours

BNSF Railway and CSX have launched a premium transcontinental intermodal train linking Los Angeles and South Kearny, N.J., on a 100-hour schedule — 26 hours faster than the interline service the two railroads introduced in November 2025.

The railroads would not name the anchor customer, but trackside observers report it is Amazon. The retailer launched Amazon Supply Chain Services in May, opening its logistics network to outside shippers, and in September introduced a service moving sellers' goods from the Port of Los Angeles by direct rail to East Coast fulfillment centers.

Observers report the train has carried more than 100 Amazon containers per day, plus boxes from other customers including J.B. Hunt. The service runs seven days a week under symbols Z-LACNWH on BNSF and I072 on CSX eastbound.

A BNSF spokeswoman says the train has converted 100 highway loads to rail daily since its Oct. 5 launch, and has room to grow based on performance so far. That figure is a railroad claim; the conversion count has not been independently verified.

FRA awards $2.3 billion in CRISI grants to 105 projects

The Federal Railroad Administration has awarded $2.3 billion in Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements grants to 105 projects across 45 states and the District of Columbia, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Oct. 19.

The projects were chosen from 368 applications seeking a combined $12.2 billion. Texas drew the most selections, with eight projects. This was the final CRISI round under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021, which advanced $1 billion per year to the program; this round combined fiscal 2025 and 2026 funding.

"From improving shortline infrastructure and port connections so critical products can get where they need to go faster to enhancing fencing along trespassing hotspots, this package will tangibly improve lives for millions of Americans," Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a press release.

The short line association called it the biggest funding commitment in the program's history.

The week ahead will test whether Transnet formalizes its record claim, whether BNSF and CSX can hold the 100-hour schedule as volumes grow, and how quickly the final CRISI dollars move from award notices to construction.
