About 1,900 high-speed passenger trains will carry parcels daily under a 20-day Singles’ Day operation launched Sunday by China’s railway authorities and running through Nov. 20.
China Railway Express, a logistics provider under China State Railway Group, the national railway operator, will deploy the trains using express storage cabinets and spare capacity within passenger services. The announcement identifies no purchase of new trainsets for that main operation.
China Railway Express said high-speed rail express capacity was “expected to increase 10 percent year-on-year.”
That 10% figure is a forecast, not a reported result. The announcement provides no baseline capacity, parcel volume, average load or measured annual change, so fleet plans and network data would be needed to verify it. The daily train counts describe intended deployment rather than demonstrated throughput.
What capacity is being added?
- Around 78 high-speed trains will provide designated carriages or areas for express shipments.
- A further 43 early-morning high-speed trains will operate without passengers and carry express goods.
- Three trains dedicated entirely to high-speed freight will serve routes linking Kunming with Chengdu and connecting Chengdu, Guangyuan and Guiyang.
- More than 210 conventional passenger trains will carry shipments in baggage cars daily.
- Eight express freight trains will operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h between major cities.
The 43 passenger-free trains create an early freight window, while the three all-freight trains devote entire trainsets to goods. Conventional services add capacity through baggage cars on more than 210 passenger trains and eight express freight services capped at 160 km/h. Together, the plan spreads parcel paths across passenger and freight operations; the 1,900 high-speed trains remain its largest stated allocation.
How does the service reach customers?\n
China Railway Express combines rail line-haul with road pickup and delivery to move parcels and freight door to door. Its urgent delivery service covers 196 major cities. Customers can book through a WeChat mini-program, with door-to-door delivery available in “as little as four hours.”
The four-hour wording marks the fastest stated service, not an average. The announcement gives no city pairs, journey-time distribution or on-time rate, so the claim should not be read as a four-hour standard across all 196 cities.
Road collection and final delivery extend the rail offer beyond station boundaries, while the WeChat mini-program provides one stated booking channel. Neither measure shows how many parcels the four-hour option handled.
Which shipments need special handling?
- Dedicated couriers will handle shipments requiring greater security or confidentiality.
- China Railway Express offers temperature-controlled transport for medicines, diagnostic reagents and biological samples.
- Additional refrigeration equipment and insulated packaging will support seasonal produce, including beef and mutton from northwestern China and seafood from the south.
- Planned rail consignments include pomelos from Ji’an, hairy crabs from Yangcheng Lake, yellow croaker from the East China Sea and flowers from Yunnan province.
Rail express services will help bring the named produce, seafood and flowers to markets nationwide. Road transport connects customers to the rail service at both ends, extending those regional shipments into a door-to-door delivery flow.
The temperature-control offering gives medicines, samples and food a dedicated handling option, while couriers address higher security and confidentiality needs. China Railway Express provides no handling-time or damage-rate data with which to test either benefit.
What has not yet been measured?
The announcement discloses no parcel count, tonnage, average load, baseline year-on-year capacity, city-pair timing or cost per shipment. It also names no supplier for the refrigeration equipment or insulated packaging.
The daily train allocation is a plan, not evidence of actual usage. Fleet diagrams and prior-year network data can test capacity; shipment and timing records can test the four-hour claim. Without them, the 10% increase remains a company forecast and no cost saving can be inferred.
By Nov. 20, the measurable test will be whether the planned trains, cold-chain equipment and road links turn the forecast 10% capacity increase into delivered parcels while preserving the stated four-hour best case. China Railway Express has not published shipment totals, loading rates or timing data, so those results remain open.
