- Duisport will run four weekly rail round trips between Cervignano and Duisburg alongside four weekly shuttles from HHLA PLT Italy's Trieste terminal.
- Duisport has worked with Interporto di Trieste since 2021, with the first rail services following in 2022.
- Wels in Austria will join the Duisport network in 2027 as a second inland hub after Cervignano.
- Operational coordination on the new frequencies rests with +.intermodal, a Duisport subsidiary.
- Duisport did not disclose tonnage figures, locomotive assignments, or wagon numbers for the new round trips.
Duisport, the operator of Europe's largest inland port, will run four weekly round trips between Cervignano and Duisburg, the company confirmed. The increase lifts frequencies on a north-south corridor that anchors the Port of Trieste to inland Germany.
Why is Cervignano's role expanding?
The added capacity covers two services:
- the international Cervignano–Duisburg connection
- a shuttle linking HHLA PLT Italy's terminal at the Port of Trieste with the inland terminal at Cervignano
Four shuttle connections per week will now feed maritime volumes into the German-bound trains. The pattern allows trains to consolidate at Cervignano before the longer cross-border run.
Before reaching Duisburg, cargo moves through Duisport's inland terminal at Cervignano, which the operator describes as a growing consolidation point for the Italian-German rail trade. The site has taken on a larger role within Duisport's intermodal network.
Duisport said Cervignano bundles maritime volumes from Trieste with other continental traffic before onward transport by rail. The model creates sufficient volumes for more frequent international services while allowing the different operators involved to retain their own customer relationships, the company added.
How has the corridor developed since launch?
Duisport began working with Interporto di Trieste in 2021. The first rail connections between Trieste and Duisburg followed in 2022. The Trieste–Duisburg route has since developed into one of the more important north-south links in the company's intermodal network, Duisport said.
Operational coordination on the new frequencies rests with +.intermodal, a Duisport subsidiary that manages intermodal flows across the group. The subsidiary will handle train planning and handover between the shuttle and the international leg at Cervignano.
What does the operator say?
"Trieste and Duisburg play an important role in the flow of goods between southern Europe and the markets in Central and Northern Europe," said Kevin Gründer, Head of Terminal and Intermodal Strategy at Duisport. "With the additional frequencies, we are increasing flexibility on this route and creating more options for shifting transports to rail."
The statement frames the change as a capacity and flexibility play rather than a volume announcement. Duisport did not disclose tonnage figures, locomotive assignments, or wagon numbers for the new round trips. The operator also did not say whether existing rail hauliers on the corridor will take part in the additional services.
What's next on the network?
Duisport said the next step will be to add Wels in Austria to the network in 2027. The Austrian city becomes the second inland point added to the network after Cervignano.
The expansion marks Duisport's first confirmed move beyond the Italian-German axis since the Cervignano service started running. Wels will plug into the same consolidation model used at Cervignano, the operator indicated. It also gives Duisport an Austrian inland point beyond the existing hub.
What remains to be clarified?
Duisport has not published a start date or timetable for the four new shuttle pairs. The company has also not identified rail hauliers other than +.intermodal for the new services. Duisport has not said how the Wels extension will alter capacity on the longer corridor or affect transit times between Trieste and inland Europe.
Duisport's ability to deliver the Wels extension by 2027, and to retain existing customers through the Cervignano consolidation model, will determine how the company's Adriatic rail business develops from here.
