What is changing on CargoBeamer's three corridors?

CargoBeamer now operates 22 weekly round-trips on Kaldenkirchen–Domodossola, a transalpine corridor between Germany and Italy. The operator describes it as "one of the most frequent intermodal rail connections in Europe." The figure marks the centrepiece of a three-corridor frequency expansion.

The expansion responds to "rising demand across all lines," CargoBeamer told RailFreight.com. The company specialises in transporting semi-trailers on rail, including non-craneable units that cannot use conventional intermodal terminals.

How big is the jump on the French domestic route?

On the Calais–Perpignan north-south axis, CargoBeamer has lifted frequency to 8 weekly round-trips. That marks the second increase on the route during 2026 and a doubling compared with the level at the start of the year, an unusually rapid ramp for a domestic intermodal product.

The French service runs across the country on a north-south axis, competing with road haulage on a corridor that crosses France end-to-end. CargoBeamer frames the change as evidence of pull from shippers seeking rail capacity that can handle both craneable and non-craneable semi-trailers.

"A strong testament to the significant demand for scalable, reliable intermodal connections that are open to transporting both craneable and non-craneable semi-trailers," the company said.

What about the Stuttgart–Milan service?

The Kornwestheim (Stuttgart)–Milan (Sacconago) service now offers 5 weekly round-trips, having previously run 4.

CargoBeamer launched the service in April in direct response to the discontinuation of a transalpine rolling highway. The 25% frequency increase takes the service to its highest level since launch, roughly five months after opening.

Why does frequency matter to CargoBeamer's commercial model?

Tilman Apitzsch, Chief Commercial Officer of CargoBeamer, links the schedule lift to reliability rather than to volume alone. His argument is that higher frequency drives schedule attractiveness, which secures the time-sensitive freight that pays the highest rates.

"We believe that high-frequency routes are the key to unlocking the full potential of intermodal transport and have therefore increased the frequencies on three of our routes," Apitzsch said. "The more often a train runs on a given connection, the more it strengthens the reliability and schedule attractiveness of our routes, providing an even stronger offering for time-sensitive supply chains."

The pitch targets logistics buyers who view rail as a complement to, rather than a replacement for, truck operations. Higher frequency narrows the gap on flexibility for the non-craneable trailers that only purpose-built equipment like CargoBeamer's can carry.

What comes next for Kaldenkirchen–Domodossola?

The operator's terminal investment sets up a further round of expansion. CargoBeamer took over the Kaldenkirchen terminal earlier in 2026 and has Domodossola in its sights, with both expanded sites due to go live in 2027.

"With the two expanded CargoBeamer terminals in Kaldenkirchen and Domodossola going live in 2027, we are excited to drastically increase the frequency on Kaldenkirchen–Domodossola again," Apitzsch said.

The forward calendar now hinges on the Kaldenkirchen and Domodossola terminal expansions, which Apitzsch expects to drive another step-change in frequency on the German–Italian axis from 2027. The Kornwestheim–Milan ramp from four to five weekly round-trips illustrates how quickly CargoBeamer scales a corridor once a competing rolling highway exits the market.
