- First two of four Wabtec FLXdrive battery-electric locomotives delivered to West Colton yard, Bloomington, California, on September 23
- Remaining two units scheduled to arrive during October
- Each Erie-built locomotive carries roughly 7 000 cells and about 2.7 MWh of energy storage with zero tailpipe emissions in operation
- Testing will cover yard shunting at West Colton and local freight haulage across the greater Los Angeles area
- Trial aims to capture performance, reliability and operational capability data under real commercial conditions
Union Pacific has taken delivery of the first two of four Wabtec FLXdrive battery-electric locomotives at its West Colton yard in Bloomington, California, with the remaining pair scheduled to arrive in October, the Class I announced on September 23.
The Erie-built locomotives each carry around 7 000 cells providing about 2.7 MWh of onboard energy storage and produce zero emissions in operation. UP and Wabtec will run them through an extensive series of tests across the greater Los Angeles area, with duties including yard shunting at West Colton and local freight haulage on surrounding lines.
Both companies expect the deployment to generate meaningful data on three fronts: performance, reliability and operational capability under real commercial conditions rather than controlled test-track runs.
What does the LA trial cover?
The test programme is structured to capture telemetry across the duty cycles a Class I freight railroad would expect battery traction to handle:
- Shunting in a busy yard environment at West Colton
- Local freight haulage across the LA basin
- A variety of operating scenarios representative of Southern California service
"By deploying FLXdrive in daily operations, we're building real-world insights needed to refine and scale battery-electric technology, delivering best-in-class value for our customers," Wabtec Chairman and CEO Rafael Santana said.
How does this fit UP's wider strategy?
The four-unit order is a concrete step in a programme UP first signalled publicly in early 2022, when it set out a goal the company described at the time as building the world's largest battery-electric locomotive fleet. Trials of this kind aim to test whether that ambition can move from announcement to revenue service.
President and CEO Jim Vena characterised the trial as a hedge against a fast-moving technology curve: "Union Pacific has never been content to stand still. Our industry is constantly evolving, and if we're not exploring what's next, we risk being left behind. Testing technologies like battery-electric locomotives help us to better understand what's possible by putting these emerging technologies to work in actual railroad operations."
Outside the US, BHP has separately taken delivery of Wabtec battery locomotives destined for the Pilbara, indicating parallel adoption momentum in adjacent rail markets.
What hardware is on the locomotives?
- Four Wabtec FLXdrive units total
- Two delivered September 23, two more due in October
- Built at Wabtec's Erie facility
- Around 7 000 cells per locomotive
- Roughly 2.7 MWh of onboard energy storage
- Zero tailpipe emissions in operation
The 2.7 MWh figure puts each unit in the same energy-storage bracket as a small utility battery cabinet, sized for yard and local-duty cycles rather than mainline haulage.
What is the operational case for West Colton?
West Colton is one of the busiest classification facilities on the UP network and sits between Southern California ports and the LA basin. Frequent stop-start movements make it a credible proving ground for measuring battery wear, regenerative-brake energy recovery and the interaction between locomotive auxiliaries and the on-board energy management software. Local freight duties will add line-haul running and gradient variation to the data set.
What comes next?
UP will operate the four units through the Los Angeles test programme over coming months, with the October-arriving pair integrating into the same rotation on delivery. Results from the Southern California deployment will determine whether battery traction scales further across UP's network or remains a yard-and-short-haul solution.
