Taiwan High Speed Rail carried a record 356,000 passengers in a single day during the recent four-day holiday weekend, surpassing the previous record of 340,000 set during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday in September 2023.

Operator Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp (THSRC) added 16 extra train services between October 7 and 10 to meet holiday demand, bringing total capacity to 1,064 services across the period.

The record was set on October 8, the second day of the long weekend marking the Double Tenth national holiday.

THSRC said it deployed all available rolling stock, operating its full fleet of 34 trainsets to maximise capacity on the 350 km Taipei–Zuoying line.

The previous single-day record of 340,000 passengers was set on September 29 2023, during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.

The new record represents a 4.7% increase over the September 2023 figure.

THSRC said it would continue to monitor demand patterns and adjust capacity allocations for future holiday periods.

The operator has been expanding its fleet, with additional Hitachi-built 700T trainsets entering service to support increased frequencies on the line, which connects Taipei with the southern port city of Kaohsiung via Zuoying.

Ridership on the line has grown steadily since the railway opened in 2007, with annual patronage now exceeding 70 million passengers.
