The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) opened its 54th light-rail station on Sept. 28, placing the $42.8 million Dos Rios facility into revenue service after the California Public Utilities Commission granted final regulatory approval.

The station sits on SacRT's Blue Line along North 12th Street between Richards Boulevard and Sunbeam Avenue, between the existing Globe and Alkali Flat/La Valentina stations. Construction began in November 2024. SacRT reports the project finished on budget and four months ahead of schedule.

"We are excited to officially welcome passengers to Dos Rios Station and deliver on a vision that has been years in the making," said SacRT General Manager and CEO Henry Li. "This new station expands access to reliable public transportation while supporting the continued growth and revitalization of the River District. We are grateful to the many partners who helped make this important project a reality."

The station serves Sacramento's River District, an area the agency says is experiencing significant residential, commercial and institutional growth. It sits near Mirasol Village and several new affordable housing communities. SacRT positions the stop as a link to jobs, housing, health care and services across the Sacramento region — claims that will be tested as development in the district matures.

Blue Line trains now stop at Dos Rios as part of regular scheduled service. Trains run seven days a week, arriving roughly every 15 minutes during peak hours and every 30 minutes off-peak.

State and federal funding covered the project, which included station construction, safe access improvements and supporting work tied to surrounding redevelopment. Partners included the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, the city of Sacramento, the California Strategic Growth Council and the California Governor's Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation. Federal funding was secured with support from Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA-07).

The network is set to grow again within weeks. SacRT expects to open the 7th & Railyards Station on the Green Line in mid-October, bringing the system to 55 stations by the end of fall 2026 — a figure that reflects the agency's own timeline rather than confirmed delivery dates.

The station opening also triggers a bus network change. SacRT will discontinue route 33, which the agency calls duplicative of the new light-rail service. The route will operate for two more weeks before being replaced by route 133, which runs a single morning trip Monday through Friday. The transition is scheduled for early October 2026.

With Dos Rios in service, the Green Line extension next in the queue, and the bus restructuring to follow, SacRT's River District buildout will show within the year whether the station's ridership projections hold against actual demand.
