Henkel has introduced a new adhesive and sealant combination designed for high-performance bonding in rolling stock applications, the company announced in materials carried by Railway Gazette International.
The launch targets a segment of rail vehicle manufacturing where suppliers increasingly replace mechanical fastening and welding with structural adhesives. Bonded joints can cut vehicle weight, distribute stress more evenly across panels, and reduce corrosion at join lines — outcomes that matter directly for operators pursuing lightweight car bodies and lower lifecycle maintenance costs.
Henkel, the Düsseldorf-based chemicals and adhesives group, supplies manufacturers across the rail sector through its Loctite brand portfolio. The company positions the new adhesive and sealant as a matched system for high-performance bonding tasks in rolling stock, covering applications where bonded assemblies must hold structural loads while sealing joints against water ingress, vibration and temperature cycling typical of rail service.
Railcar builders have shifted steadily toward adhesive bonding over the past two decades, particularly in aluminium and composite bodyshell construction, where welding is either impractical or risks distorting thin-walled panels. Adhesive suppliers compete on processed cure times, elongation properties and certification against fire-smoke-toxicity (FST) standards such as EN 45545, which governs materials used in European rolling stock.
Henkel has not yet published full technical datasheets for the new products, including figures for lap-shear strength, Shore hardness or certification status. Railway Gazette International's report carries the launch announcement as a supplier claim; procurement teams will need to weigh the products against established structural adhesives from competitors such as Sika and 3M, both active in rail bonding applications.
The announcement comes as rolling stock manufacturers face pressure to shorten production cycles and raise throughput. Faster-curing adhesives and sealants that still meet fire-safety and long-term durability requirements can directly affect assembly-line speed and cost per vehicle.
For operators, the material choice translates into fleet-level outcomes: lighter car bodies reduce energy consumption per train-kilometre, and sealed joints extend intervals between structural inspections.
Henkel says the new adhesive and sealant are available now for rolling stock applications. Broader adoption will depend on qualification with individual car builders and, for European contracts, compliance with EN 45545 hazard-level requirements specified by operators and national safety authorities.
