China's national rail operator forecasts roughly 284 million passenger trips between September 23 and October 8, with capacity on four newly opened high-speed sections now feeding into the National Day travel peak.

The four lines opened to traffic on September 28, spanning northern, northwestern, central and northeastern China. The most westerly of the new sections, Xi'an–Ankang, brings the Shaanxi capital within 45 minutes of Ankang. The Yichang–Xingshan line in Hubei Province stretches 101 km and is designed for 350 km/h operation; train G6888 was the first service to depart Xingshan Railway Station on launch day.

What is the network impact?

The four sections add capacity across corridors that previously constrained high-speed services, according to China State Railway Group (China Railway), the state-owned operator that owns and builds most of the network.

Yuan Baohua, deputy director of the construction department at China Railway, said the Yichang–Xingshan section "effectively links high-quality cultural and tourism resources," while the Harbin–Yichun link in Heilongjiang "creates conditions for developing tourism and ecological resources" along its route.

Liu Yanhong, deputy general manager of Xiong'an high-speed railway corporation, said the Xiong'an–Shangqiu section ties historical and cultural tourism assets across Hebei, Shandong and Henan provinces, supporting cross-regional short-haul leisure travel.

How do the new sections change journey times?

The Xi'an–Ankang corridor is the headline timing improvement, with the 45-minute end-to-end journey enabling day-return trips from the Guanzhong Plain.

Qu Xiaoyuan, a local cultural and tourism official in Ankang in northwestern Shaanxi, said the line brings major cities within practical day-trip distance for the first time. "The most direct impact is that cities are much closer now — not just on the map, but in everyday life," Qu said.

Qu added that operators expect weekend and short-holiday flows to rise materially, with attractions likely to differentiate their product to avoid copycat offerings. "Turning first-time visitors into repeat visitors requires continuous efforts to improve tourism products and service quality," Qu said.

What is the demand outlook?

China Railway expects passenger flow to peak on October 1, the first day of the National Day holiday window. The 284 million-trip forecast is the company's first multi-modal holiday estimate covering the combined Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day period. China Railway has not yet disclosed forecast load factors on the four new sections, leaving open how much incremental traffic the lines will carry beyond what existed on conventional rail and intercity coach services on the same corridors.

Holiday ridership data covering the September 23 to October 8 window will be released after the travel period closes, providing the first measured indication of how the new sections perform under peak load.
