- Overnight testing begins October 3 and runs approximately five months on the Expo and Millennium lines.
- The new 40,000-square-foot operations control center is scheduled to become fully operational in 2027.
- It is the first expansion of SkyTrain operations control space since 1985; the network is now about four times its original size.
- Testing occurs Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays in overnight windows, with no customers aboard and no service disruptions.
- The center will support the Broadway Subway Extension opening next year and the Surrey Langley Extension in 2029.
TransLink will begin five months of overnight testing on October 3, the largest technological upgrade in SkyTrain's history and the critical step toward bringing a new operations control center online in 2027.
The Vancouver-area operator says all types of SkyTrain cars will run overnight tests on sections of the Expo and Millennium lines. Testing takes place outside regular service hours, with no customers aboard, and TransLink reports no disruptions or reductions to normal SkyTrain service.
The new control center matters because of what follows it. The Broadway Subway Extension opens next year and the Surrey Langley Extension follows in 2029, and the 40,000-square-foot facility will manage the service those projects add. Without the new center, the network's existing control infrastructure — dating to SkyTrain's launch — would have to supervise a system it was never sized for.
When and where will the overnight testing take place?
Test trains will operate across different sections of the Expo and Millennium lines over approximately five months, during three overnight windows:
- Saturdays: 1:45 a.m. to 5:45 a.m.
- Sundays: 1:45 a.m. to 6:45 a.m.
- Mondays: 12:45 a.m. to 4:45 a.m.
The staggered windows reflect the early-morning gaps between the end of late-night service and the start of the first morning departures. TransLink has structured the program so that every test run happens while the guideway is otherwise out of service.
What does the testing actually prove?
During the test period, the new center will gradually assume control of live trains and exercise a range of operating scenarios. TransLink identifies three categories of operations under test:
- Regular daily service
- Routine maintenance
- Emergency response
The progressive handover is the standard approach for commissioning a new rail control installation: rather than switching over in a single cutover, the new center accumulates operating experience on real infrastructure before it carries full responsibility for the network.
Once fully operational in 2027, the facility is intended to improve the reliability, resilience and capacity of the rapid transit network, and to accommodate growth that TransLink says will keep more SkyTrain riders moving safely and efficiently across the region for decades.
Why does a control center matter this much?
The scale of the change is straightforward. This is the first expansion of SkyTrain's operations control space since 1985, even as the network has grown to roughly four times its original size.
That gap between infrastructure and mandate frames the project. A control center opened in the mid-1980s has supervised a system that has quadrupled, and two more extensions — Broadway next year and Surrey Langley in 2029 — will add further demand. The 2027 commissioning date positions the new facility ahead of the Surrey Langley opening, giving roughly two years of operational margin.
TransLink frames the October 3 start as the beginning of a measured commissioning process rather than a single event. If the five-month overnight program stays on schedule, the control center would complete its train-control validation by early spring, keeping the 2027 full-operations date within reach as the Broadway Subway Extension enters service next year.
