  1. Quectel launched an LGA variant of its RG660Qx 5G module supporting FRMCS bands n100 and n101, with an evaluation kit for device-level testing.
  2. The RG660Qx series uses Qualcomm X85 and X82 5G Modem-RF systems, delivering up to 10 Gb/sec ethernet speeds and Power Class 1.5 for extended coverage.
  3. The module and evaluation kit will be available to any requesting customer once validation is complete; no date was given.

Quectel Wireless Solutions has launched a Land Grid Array version of its RG660Qx 5G communications module, designed specifically to enable evaluation, testing and early interoperability development for the Future Railway Mobile Communication System.

The move targets one of the rail sector's most consequential technology transitions: the replacement of GSM-R, the communications standard that underpins railway operations across Europe and beyond. Quectel says it is investing early to give its customers a reliable migration path to FRMCS before the shift gathers pace.

The RG660Qx series is built on Qualcomm Technologies' X85 and X82 5G Modem-RF systems. The modules deliver ethernet speeds of up to 10 Gb/sec and support Power Class 1.5, which extends coverage — a critical requirement for railway corridors where radio conditions vary across long distances. The series also supports high-capacity fixed wireless access and enterprise networking use cases beyond rail.

Railway-specific variant

The standard RG660Qx hardware does not, on its own, address FRMCS requirements. To enable FRMCS testing, Quectel developed the LGA-format variant with support for bands n100 and n101 — the frequency ranges designated for railway mobile communications. Paired with the module, Quectel offers an evaluation kit that the company says accelerates device-level testing and evaluation of FRMCS functionalities.

Availability carries one condition. The module and evaluation kit will be offered to any customer requesting them once validation is complete. Quectel has not published a firm date for that validation, meaning operators and suppliers hoping to begin interoperability work will need to time their programmes around the vendor's own schedule — a factor worth checking against FRMCS pilot timelines elsewhere in the industry.

The company said it plans to engage with key players across the railway industry to initiate early-stage testing. No specific operators, infrastructure managers or suppliers were named.

A claim to be tested against fleet plans

As with any supplier announcement in the FRMCS field, the practical impact depends on adoption. Quectel positions the LGA variant and evaluation kit as tools that let customers begin 5G evaluation and interoperability testing now rather than waiting for formal FRMCS rollout. For rolling stock manufacturers and onboard system integrators, the modules could shorten the development cycle for radio equipment destined for FRMCS-ready trains. For operators, the availability of test hardware supports trials that must precede any fleet-wide migration from GSM-R.

Leo Yao, Product Head at Quectel Wireless Solutions, framed the launch in terms of preparation. 'FRMCS represents one of the most significant communications transitions the rail industry will undergo in the coming years, and we want our customers to be ready well ahead of that shift,' he said. 'By bringing an LGA variant and evaluation kit to market now, we are enabling customers to begin 5G evaluation, interoperability testing and FRMCS development today, helping accelerate migration from GSM-R.'

The claim of acceleration rests on how quickly validation completes and how broadly the modules reach device developers. What is measured today is the hardware specification: Qualcomm's X85 and X82 modem platforms, 10 Gb/sec ethernet capability, Power Class 1.5 support, and n100/n101 band coverage in an LGA package. The pace of FRMCS migration itself remains a projection, set by industry standards bodies and network deployment schedules rather than by module availability.

Quectel says it will report on early-stage testing engagements with railway industry players as the programme develops.
