Projektbahn and Innofreight have agreed a partnership covering the transfer of rolling stock between the two companies, the freight equipment marketplace RAILMARKET.com reported this week. The deal connects Austrian wagon builder Innofreight with German rail logistics operator Projektbahn for fleet movements across Central Europe.
Innofreight has produced more than 6,000 freight wagons since its founding in 2002, supplying operators in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and the Balkans. Headquartered in Bruck an der Mur, the company runs a portfolio that includes the InnoWagon bulk carrier, the modular ContainerWagen platform, the Ecowagon timber transporter and the wood-chip-optimised SmartWagon. Innofreight's commercial pitch centres on lightweight aluminium construction, digital load monitoring and modular loading systems designed for forestry, intermodal and aggregates traffic.
What is Projektbahn's role?
Projektbahn operates freight and logistics services in Germany and neighbouring markets, offering wagon hire, traction and end-to-end train planning. The company works with industrial shippers in steel, forestry, construction materials and automotive flows. By drawing on Innofreight-built wagons under the new framework, Projektbahn can expand capacity without committing balance-sheet capital to fresh wagon orders.
The arrangement also gives Innofreight a deployment channel for stock that would otherwise sit idle in Austria during demand troughs. Both companies describe the cooperation as a flexible tool for matching wagon supply to contract demand rather than a fixed-volume purchase.
What wagon types are in scope?
Neither side has disclosed the exact wagon classes covered, the contract duration or the specific corridors. A spokesperson for Innofreight said the framework is designed to scale with demand and may extend to additional wagon families in future, including intermodal and bulk-carrying variants. The two companies have indicated that the first movements are expected within the current quarter.
Why does cross-border wagon pooling matter now?
Cross-border rail freight between Germany and Austria runs through some of the most capacity-constrained corridors on the continent. The Brenner axis is mid-way through the Brenner Base Tunnel construction programme, with phased track closures reducing path availability for freight trains through 2026. ÖBB's roll-out of ETCS Level 2 on the Brenner corridor has already withdrawn pre-equipped wagons from the network; operators without ETCS-ready vehicles face restrictions on key Alpine routes from 2025 onward.
Both conditions push operators toward pool-and-transfer models rather than outright new-build orders, which carry multi-year lead times. Innofreight's fleet is ETCS-ready across the bulk of its modern wagon families, making it a natural source of compliant stock for operators without their own digital fleet.
What are the commercial terms?
Pricing, maintenance responsibilities and the share of risk between wagon owner and user have not been published. Industry practice for these arrangements typically splits maintenance between the wagon keeper and the operator, with the keeper retaining registration and insurance. A formal maintenance and telematics protocol between Innofreight and Projektbahn is expected in the coming weeks as the partnership moves from announcement to operation.
Shippers in the German-Austrian timber and aggregates markets are likely to see the first effects, given the wagon families the partnership is expected to deploy. Further expansion into intermodal and chemical flows would require additional wagon types, including InnoWagon variants and possibly InnoTrans-tracked ContainerWagen modules.
The two companies have framed the agreement as a long-term cooperation rather than a one-off transfer, with potential to widen the wagon pool as the Brenner works progress and demand for ETCS-fitted capacity rises across the Alpine corridor.
