The Ohio Department of Transportation has awarded $13.5 million through the Ohio Workforce Mobility Partnership Program to transit agencies serving 13 counties, funding 19 projects that link residents to employment centers outside their home communities in both rural and urban parts of the state.
The grant cycle, established with backing from the Ohio General Assembly, covers infrastructure, equipment, technology, vehicles and planning. ODOT says the current round supports projects run by local transit authorities, regional transportation districts and county partners, including bus equipment purchases, replacement of existing equipment, transit facility expansions, improved signage and modernized bus shelters.
"When we connect workers directly to reliable transportation, our entire economy improves," said Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. "This new round of funding ensures that hard-working Ohioans can easily reach growing employment centers, helping businesses stay fully staffed and competitive."
The largest project detailed in the announcement belongs to the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, which received $620,000. GCRTA will use the money to modernize light-rail signage and install raised modular boarding platforms along two main bus corridors.
The modular platforms carry an operational rationale: buses remain in the travel lane rather than pulling to the curb between parked cars or across a bike lane. According to GCRTA, this eliminates the delay of waiting to merge back into traffic, cutting travel time and improving safety for passengers, pedestrians and riders using mobility devices.
The second component of the GCRTA project addresses passenger information. The agency will install high-visibility digital transit signage delivering real-time schedule information, track-level wayfinding and service alerts for workers and daily riders.
"This investment recognizes the essential role of transit in keeping our communities connected and Ohio's economy moving forward," said GCRTA Programming and Planning Director Maribeth Feke. "Raised modular bus boarding platforms and modern passenger signage make our system more accessible and dependable for thousands of residents traveling to work, school, medical appointments and other daily destinations."
Ohio Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel framed the program in workforce terms. "Ohio's economic momentum depends on a strong, dependable workforce and getting people to work is a critical piece of that puzzle," he said. "By investing in smart, efficient transit options, we are empowering Ohioans to take advantage of new job opportunities while strengthening our state's workforce team."
ODOT has not yet published a full list of the 19 funded projects or a breakdown of the remaining $12.9 million among the other recipient agencies. The announced scope — equipment purchases, facility work and station-area improvements — indicates the program is directed at near-term operational upgrades rather than new service launches.
For GCRTA, the platform and signage work adds to ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and passenger information across its bus and rail network. The agency's stated outcomes — shorter dwell-related delays and better real-time information — will be testable once the platforms enter service on the two corridors.
