Calling at
- Canada and Alberta will create a joint governance structure for Calgary–Red Deer–Edmonton high-speed rail.
- The initiative was announced Oct. 5, 2026, and referred to the federal Major Projects Office.
- The Alberta corridor work complements the Alto project, a planned ~1,000 km (621.4-mile) Toronto–Québec City high-speed network.
- No funding amount, route or timeline was announced; next steps include market-sounding activities.
The governments of Canada and Alberta will establish a joint governance structure to advance high-speed rail in the Calgary–Red Deer–Edmonton corridor, referring the initiative to the federal Major Projects Office (MPO).
The two governments announced the collaboration on Oct. 5, 2026, framing it as a co-ordinated effort to assess high-speed rail connectivity along Alberta's principal north-south corridor. No funding amount, route alignment or delivery timeline accompanied the announcement.
What does the agreement actually change?
The immediate steps are procedural rather than construction-related:
- Referral of the initiative to the MPO as a strategy to strengthen intergovernmental collaboration, align expertise across departments and agencies, and support co-ordinated implementation.
- Creation of a joint governance structure to guide collaboration and support planning activities.
- Exploration of near-term activities to assess market interest and implementation opportunities, including potential market-sounding exercises.
Both governments say they will share expertise and information and identify next steps to advance planning. As work progresses, they will engage with Indigenous communities, municipalities, industry, investors, stakeholders and the public.
The corridor at stake links Calgary, Red Deer and Edmonton — a stretch of roughly 300 km that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described as one of Canada's fastest-growing economic corridors.
How does it fit federal rail plans?
The collaboration runs alongside Ottawa's existing high-speed rail programme, Alto, which plans an approximately 1,000 km (621.4-mile) network between Toronto and Québec City. The governments describe the Alberta work as complementing ongoing federal efforts to strengthen passenger rail and improve intercity connectivity across Canada.
Federal Transport Minister and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons Steve MacKinnon cast the announcement in broad terms. "High-speed rail has great potential to reshape the way people move in Canada and supports Alberta's economic growth, productivity and regional connectivity," MacKinnon said. "Today's collaboration demonstrates our shared commitment to exploring opportunities that could deliver lasting benefits for Albertans and Canadians."
Smith positioned the project as a generational investment. "Connecting Calgary, Red Deer and Edmonton with high-speed rail would be a generational investment in Alberta's future. As our province continues to grow, we need to build the infrastructure that keeps people, businesses and our economy moving," she said. "By working with the federal government, we are taking the next steps toward a project that could strengthen one of Canada's fastest-growing economic corridors and support Alberta's growth for decades to come."
What comes next?
The announcement commits the governments to planning and market engagement, not construction. Market-sounding activities and joint governance work will determine whether the corridor attracts private-sector interest and advances toward a defined project scope.
